MODULE 01

How to Draw a Croissant

Reflection

This module shed some light on the various techniques of representing a structure. It also established the expectations of the subject, in that there were certain timeframes and requirements that I had to follow to do well. Learning how to create orthographic and axonometric drawings was a really interesting process and through the course material, I can see that it is one of the most fundamental, commonly used means of representation. Orthographics can easily be annotated with helpful information and provide different perspectives of the same object, giving a good overview of all its aspects. The axonometric usually reveals what is inside of said object, exploring the relationship between the interior and the exterior with a perspective that has to be carefully constructed. Overall, this module gave me a broad introduction to drawing orthographics and axonometrics, as well as different shading techniques with pen/pencil and basic Photoshop editing skills.

Photographs

Initially, I thought my makeshift photostage and fairly dated phone camera would be insufficient to produce good pictures, but the results were surprising. By positioning the light and setting up the camera in a fixed spot, the pictures looked almost taken with a proper camera. After many, many shots (pictured right), I was able to pick out a few good pictures to use.

Orthographics

While drawing the orthographics, it was very easy for me to spend too much time on a single drawing fixing minute details, but I reminded myself to keep to the suggested times and move on to other parts.

The different drawings allowed me to experiment with the different shading techniques (hatching, smudging, etc.) It also marked the beginning of using poche to represent section cuts.

Axonometric

This task was the most daunting to me, but once I got started, I found it quite manageable. It was easier for me to draw everything on different pieces of tracing paper because it was easier to set up and I could then arrange the  individual elements in Photoshop.

It was quite refreshing to be seeing the croissant from a different perspective as the axonometric provided a view of both the interior and exterior of the croissant in one projection.

Editing

Learning to use Photoshop to clean up, edit and layout the drawings was a very new experience for me and took me some time to get used to it. However, comparing my original drawings and the final results showed me just how much Photoshop did to enhance and polish my drawings.
